Bewildered and desperate, Richard enlists the aid of a paranormal investigator who confirms that Sarah has become possessed by a powerful dem...。渡辺小五郎（東山紀之）の家では、義母のこう（野際陽子）が亡くなって以来、妻のふく（中越典子）が失意の日々を送っていた。妻の身を案じた小五郎は、同僚の同心・住之江彦左衛門（松尾諭）のすすめで義母の遺品整理を決める。渡辺家にやってきたのは弥吉（伊藤健太郎）という爽やかな青年。油問屋で手代として働くかたわら、人々の不要な品物を引き取っては、他の人の品物と交換する「橋渡し役」をしているという。 持ち前の顔の広さで、経師屋の涼次（松岡昌宏）やお菊（和久井映見）とも付き合いのある弥吉だが、交換の橋渡しはすべて無償でおこなっているという。人と人をつなぐために汗をかく弥吉は、まさに絵に描いたような善人だ。商人の蘇我屋忠兵衛（近藤芳正）と上総屋清右ヱ門（西田敏行）から、交換の手間賃を受け取って商売にしろと誘いを受けても、きっぱり断った。 そんな弥吉には将来を約束した許...。
