孤儿易卜拉随长辈前往圣地麦加朝圣，途中经过北京。易卜拉偶然被“奇珍斋”内的精美玉器吸引，最终放弃朝圣，留在这里跟随店主梁亦清学习琢玉手艺。此后，师徒俩合作，为“汇远斋”制作“郑和航海船”玉器。梁亦清耗时三年，为这件宝物耗尽心血，最终却因玉器损毁、心力交瘁而亡。为赔偿损失，易卜拉更名为韩子奇，在“汇远斋”苦干三年，琢玉手艺愈发精湛。回到“奇珍斋”后，他迎娶师傅的长女君壁为妻，决心重振师门字号。十年后，韩子奇已是名贯京城的玉匠，家中妻贤子乖，生活安稳。然而抗日战争爆发，韩子奇唯恐珍藏的玉器在战乱中受损，便与妻妹冰玉一同前往伦敦避难。浮华乱世中，异地他乡的孤苦与扶持，让韩子奇与冰玉之间滋生出别样的情愫，两人更诞下一女，取名新月。战后回国，面对早已物是人非的家庭与过往，他们将如何收拾这一地残局…… 本片根据霍达同名长篇小说改编。。The film shows an obscure episode from the life of a Stalinist criminal - Colonel of the Office of Public Security, Julia Brystiger.
